Emily Mary Dyke Acland fought in the Second World War, in the Auxiliary Territorial Service and First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. She held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Somerset in 1946. She lived in 1999 in Middle Croft, Bossington Lane, Porlock, Somerset.
Sir Hugh Thomas Dyke Acland Kt CMG CBE FRES
He became a distinguished surgeon and a founder of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. His research included work on cancer. Sir Hugh was educated at Christ’s College, Otago University and St Thomas’ Hospital, London.
During the Boer War he served as a civil surgeon and in World War 1 saw service with the New Zealand Medical Corps in France. For 25 years he was honorary surgeon to Christchurch Hospital and he also served as a member of the North Canterbury Hospital Board.
Sir Hugh also served on the Christchurch City Council and Peel Forest Board. In 1933, he was knighted.
