He fought in the First World War. He gained the rank of Major and Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the 16th/5th Lancers. He was decorated with the award of Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1918. He was GSO(1) of the 4th Cavalry , 2nd Cavalry Division between 1918 and 1919. He gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the 10th Hussars. He was commander of the 10th Hussars between 1923 and 1927. He was commander of the 6th Cavalry Brigade between 1928 and 1929. He was Temporary Brigadier and Assistant Director of Remounts, War Office in 1929.
