Frank Thomas Blackaby

"Frank Blackaby, who has died of cancer aged 78, made his mark in two fields - economics and peace research. The influence he had in both is a testament to the passion of his beliefs and his writing, and he demonstrated his high moral sense by being a conscientious objector, working during the war with the Friends Ambulance Service.
Brought up within a non-Conformist family, he went to the Perse School, Cambridge. With Cambridge degrees in classics and economics, he began his career as an economist at the Treasury. In 1958, he moved to the London-based National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), and, between 1963 and 1968, edited its economics review, the first independent contribution to the understanding of the economic situation of the day. Henry Fuller Acland Hood

"Through this toilsome world alas
Once and only once I pass
If a kindness I may show
If a good deed I may do
To any suffering fellow man
Let me do it while I can
No delay, for it is plain
I shall not pass this way again"
