"In 1617 Samuel Fuller purchased the [Tanners] manor and it is he who is credited with the building of the present house. His initials 'SF' can be traced over the door. The Fuller family purchased many estates in Sussex which they farmed before they developed their extensive interest in the iron industry. Tanners, though, remained one of the family homes. The house built by Samuel Fuller was 'E' shaped and it is surmised that two of the wings were later pulled down following John Fuller's move to Brightling Park."
