By Anthony CrossMatthew Shiffner (d. 1756), said to be the son of an archbishop of Riga. Shiffner became a naturalized Englishman in 1711, joined the Russian Company, and settled eventually in London, conducting the English end of the business from his office in Broad Street. His sons Henry (1721-95) and John obtained their freedoms by patrimony in 1743 and 1750 respectively and joined the firm (Shiffner & Wolff)...
Finally it is not without significance that Shiffner and Wolff, irrespective of their own merits, became the most successful firm (among the British) precisely in the reign of Anna: Matthew Shiffner's wife had been governess to the Duchess of Kurland, the future empress, who was godmother to the Shiffners' daughter Benigna.
