The most enigmatic member of the Fuller family of Sussex, England was John "Mad Jack" Fuller (1757-1834), Squire of Brightling. He was a member of parliament, philanthropist, folly builder, patron of the arts and sciences and founding member of the Royal Institution. He never married and has no known children. In 1575, the first Fuller arrived in Waldron, Sussex and took over the lease of Tanners Manor. The family fortune was amassed through ironfounding, landownership and sugar plantations in Jamaica.
